Earth Science Topics

6th - 12th Grade Textbooks

Level 2 Course 1

The Course 1 Earth Science topics and textbooks are designed for students in 6th – 12th grades. This advanced Earth Science course includes information on the structure of our planet and how it is created.

The lessons in the advanced course includes information on plate tectonics, the rock cycle, subduction zones supervolcanoes, and megathrust earthquakes.

What is the Rock Cycle

The Rock Cycle is the never ending creation and destruction of rocks that occurs on our planet. Igneous rocks were all derived from magma, molten rock that cooled into solid rock. There are three major groups of sedimentary rocks. Clastic rocks are bits and pieces of older rocks that have been formed into new rocks. Organic rocks include coal and coral reefs. Chemical rocks, like salt, crystallize when older rocks dissolve and the minerals crystallize in shallow oceans or dried inland lakes. Metamorphic rocks form when heat and pressure causes older rocks to recrystallize without melting into new rocks.

Facts about volcanoes

Seventy-five percent of the active and dormant volcanoes are found in a horse-shoe shaped area around the Pacific Ocean. Shield volcanoes, stratovolcanoes, cinder cones and domes are four major groups of volcanoes. Our Level 2 Volcanoes textbook has sixteen lessons on different topics about volcanoes. Students learn about the rocks associated with different volcanoes and the types of eruptions that occur when they erupt. Students also learn about supervolcanoes and Yellowstone Park where a supervolcano is located.

What causes earthquakes?

Earthquakes are vibrations inside the Earth that follow the release of energy that has built up inside the rocks. Rocks fracturing, volcanoes erupting, and man made explosions can release the energy stored in the rocks. There are three types of plate boundaries and ninety percent of the earthquakes on Earth occur at these boundaries. The above information and much more is contained in your Level 2 Earthquake textbook. Topics of the lessons include: Earthquake History, Seismic Waves, Plate Tectonics, Faults and three earthquake scales. Each lesson contains an activity/project that increases a student’s understanding of the topic.

Earth Science Topics

The advanced Earth Science topics covered in Course 1 include the Rock Cycle, Volcanoes and Earthquakes. The Rock Cycle textbook includes information on sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks. The Volcanoes textbook covers major types of volcanoes, how they form and notorious volcanoes. The Earthquakes textbook includes information on what causes earthquakes, types of earthquake waves and where they occur.

Video Lessons

Video lessons include information on Earth Science that is not included in the textbooks. Myrna introduces each lesson and gives this additional background information on Earth Science during each video lesson.

Kids Science Activities

The kids science activities are fun and easy to do. They also increase a student's understanding of the information taught in the lesson about the Earth science topics. Examples of the activities include: Sand Slides, Creating a Playa, Fantasy Islands, Volcano Flip Book, Fault Blocks, and Geo-Bingo.
