Level 1 The Rock Cycle

3rd - 6th Grade Students

Our Level 1 Rock Cycle lessons include igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks. The book is designed to be completed in one month by students who finish three lessons per week. Each lesson contains information, quiz and a hands-on activity.

Our DVD that comes with our complete kit contains video lessons taught by the author. The author introduces each lesson and gives additional background information on the topic of the lesson. The additional information is not covered in the textbook.

All our lesson plans contain a hands-on activity. The activities are designed to be fun and usually simple to do. They also increase students understanding of the information taught in the lesson.

Lessons Include:

Fascinating facts about rocks

The Earth has two types of rocks that form the crust. Continental crustal rocks contain primarily quartz and feldspar minerals. Scientists use the term felsic to define rocks that are primarily made of these two minerals. Most of the rocks that make up both the basement and surface rocks of our continents are felsic. They are the oldest rocks on our planet.

The oceanic crust is made primarily of basalt rocks. Basalt rocks form from magma derived from the upper mantle. The minerals in the upper mantle are rich in iron and magnesium minerals. They are much heavier than the continental crust rocks. New oceanic crust forms at spreading centers where crustal plates are separating. The oceanic crust is recycled in subduction zones where oceanic plates are forced under continental plates and younger oceanic crust.
